About William M Greene

My name is Dr. Greene, and I graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. I attended medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa and completed my residency in general psychiatry and fellowship in addiction medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Upon completion of my fellowship in 2007, I joined the faculty at UFCOM as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Addiction Medicine. Following my hire, I served as Medical Director of Inpatient Addiction Services at UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital. In this role, I was the attending physician on a busy teaching service for an 18-bed inpatient dual disorders unit, where I led care and teaching for 15 years. This service became ā€œground zeroā€ at UF Health for training medical students and addiction medicine fellows in the field of addiction medicine. I also maintain a busy outpatient practice with UF Health, where I provide evaluations and routine clinical care. I am board-certified in both Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry. In 2017, I was promoted to Associate Professor, and since 2022, my primary clinical assignment has been supervising general psychiatry residents in the outpatient clinic. In 2025, I accepted the role of Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Program.

Beyond my clinical service and teaching, I have long been active in medical student education. I provide a 2-hour addiction medicine review lecture to every MSIII clerkship group and helped create and update the addiction medicine exam. In graduate medical education, I served as Associate Program Director, and later Program Director, for the ACGME-accredited Addiction Medicine Fellowship. My work has also been recognized through local, regional, and national speaking engagements, lectures, and publications. I was invited to deliver a mandatory 2-hour CME lecture on Controlled Substance Prescribing at the statewide conference of the Florida Psychiatric Society and also developed a UF CME lecture on this important topic. I have co-authored numerous scholarly articles and textbook chapters in addiction medicine and psychiatry. I am a five-time recipient of UFCOM’s Exemplary Teacher Award and had the privilege of serving as President of the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine.
