Message from the Training Director

Andrea Guastello, PhD

The University of Florida Division of Psychology offers a one-year training program to those who have a doctoral degree from an APA- or CPA-accredited program in Clinical, School, or Counseling Psychology, or expected graduation from such a program before our start date. Our program is APPIC accredited and follows the APPIC common hold date.

Our patient population is diverse geographically, racially, and socioeconomically. Our general catchment area ranges from Central Florida to Southern Georgia, though patients and families travel nationally and sometimes internationally for our specialized services. Thus, our specialty postdoc training programs are designed to target areas of particularly high need for expert providers. We believe these programs will serve underrepresented populations and give our postdocs highly marketable skills for their next positions.

We are especially proud of the multidisciplinary environment created by the Department of Psychiatry. Our faculty throughout the department are recognized experts in their field and actively engaged in research and continuing education training. Postdocs are equal members of the treatment team and work collaboratively with medical providers. This environment allows us to serve treatment refractory cases and complex presentations as well as develop, test, and refine novel treatment modalities. Our faculty enjoy the intellectual curiosity stimulated by this multidisciplinary environment and shared with our trainees.

After graduation, the majority of our postdocs attain licensure and take on patient-facing roles including faculty in academic medical settings, program directors or clinical supervisors, private or group practice, or staff psychologists. They have been competitive applicants nationally and many postdocs have taken positions outside of Florida after graduation.

The postdoc training year is an exciting time of growth as students move from developing competencies to refining specialties and increasing fluencies. Full schedules, challenging cases, and some time outside your comfort area are important elements of this capstone year of training. Nevertheless, these programs were intentionally designed provide work-life balance. Clinic hours are 8am to 5pm and after-hours administrative works is minimized. Our compensation and personal leave time is competitive with national markets, though the cost of living in Gainesville is relatively lower. The State of Florida does not have income tax. Postdocs are able to live close to work and save on commuting time. There is something here for everyone. We love living here, and we hope you will too!
