Curriculum

Clinical Service

  • Interns dedicate time to direct service activities related to assessment, intervention, consultation, and inter-professional collaborations. Interns may gain experience with a range of presenting problems, including disruptive behavior disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, trauma, and suicide and self-harm. The amount of time that is devoted to direct service delivery varies, with a range of 14-18 hours of face-to-face services per week. Additional time is built into schedules for clinical service-related activities including care coordination, documentation, preparation, telephone calls, etc. Total time in clinical service tasks is about 70% of intern time.
  • Serving a large catchment area, many patients live in North Central Florida including Alachua and surrounding counties. However, patients also travel from across the state of Florida, as well as Georgia. Doctoral interns see patients with private insurance who are referred by other providers or who self-refer. The youngest patients served are 2.5 years old and there is no upper age limit.
  • Rotations are 6-12 months. Below is a list of possible rotations. Please note that rotation availability may vary each year.
    • Outpatient Therapy Clinic
    • Assessment Clinic
    • Child and Adolescent Trauma Clinic
    • OCD Clinic
    • PCIT Clinic
    • UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit

Supervision

Interns receive at least four hours of in-person supervision per week (10% of time) from licensed psychologists (in the state of Florida) who carry professional practice responsibility for the cases being supervised. At least two of those hours are regularly scheduled individual supervision. The other two hours of supervision are obtained in a variety of formats, including additional individual supervision, group supervision, and tiered supervision (e.g., with postdoctoral fellow and licensed psychologist). Supervisors will review documents, review video/audio taped sessions, and engage in live observation. Further, interns have access to consultation and supervision during times they are providing clinical services.

Didactics

  • Didactics occur every Tuesday from 1:00-3:00pm (2 hours per week). Interns participate in a variety of planned educational activities; some activities are conducted with interns only, and others include other trainees (e.g., psychology postdoctoral fellows, child and adolescent psychiatry fellows).
  • An additional 2 hours per week of didactics are offered for a total of 4 hours per week (10% of time):
    • Based on interest, interns are also encouraged to consider joining weekly multidisciplinary case conferences for either the OCD, Anxiety, & Related Disorders Track or the Autism Spectrum Disorders Assessment and Intervention Track.
    • Additional department-wide didactics also occur on Fridays.

Research

Doctoral interns can spend 10% of their time in research activities. Doctoral interns are expected to prioritize the completion of their dissertation. Once the dissertation is completed, additional time can be spent collaborating with other trainees and/or faculty on additional scholarly activities.
