Hospital Consultation and Services Track

Unique Training Elements for this Track

This track focuses on applying the principles of behavior analysis to provide necessary support to allow patients access to their medical and psychiatric care. In this multidisciplinary setting, trainees will learn consultation-liaison skills while facilitating behavioral assessment and treatment in the context of acute care. They will also serve as important contributors to the continuing education of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers on caring for patients with challenging behavior. Each trainee will be expected to engage in clinical research and/or hospital quality improvement.

Medical Consultation (sub-track):

Trainees will be supervised while engaged in consultation-liaison services and clinical research within the medical campus, across the main hospital, children’s hospital, and emergency departments. Activities will include functional assessment, behavior plan development and implementation, provider and staff training, family guidance, and bedside support.

Psychiatric Consultation (sub-track):

Trainees will be supervised while engaged in consultation-liaison services and clinical research within the psychiatric hospital, with services provided across all inpatient units. Activities will include functional assessment, behavior plan development and implementation, provider and staff training, and direct unit support.

Inpatient Specialty Programs (sub-track):

Trainees will be supervised while engaged in specialty behavior analysis services and clinical research within either the psychiatric hospital or medical campus. Activities may include case management for specific assigned patients requiring specialized behavior analysis services, supervision of direct care staff, functional assessment, behavior plan development and implementation, provider and staff training, direct unit support, and daily, multidisciplinary collaboration.

Autism Case Conference (required, as assigned):

Trainees will participate in a weekly, multi-disciplinary case conference on autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Activities will include providing and receiving educational content on topics related to ASD, presenting patient cases for consultation as needed to the multidisciplinary team, and providing consultative support as a member of the multidisciplinary team on behavior-analytic recommendations for patient cases presented.
