About William M Greene

My name is Dr. Greene, and I graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. I attended medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa and completed my residency in general psychiatry and fellowship in addiction medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

In 2007, I joined the UF faculty as an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry’s division of addiction medicine. Since then, I have continuously served as the attending physician for our 18-bed drug and alcohol detoxification unit at the UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital. In 2017, I was promoted to associate professor, and in 2021, I became program director for the addiction medicine fellowship. A personal journey with recovery inspired me to help others in this regard.

My most important accomplishments happen by way of one positive patient outcome at a time. As far as traditional accomplishments, it was my honor to serve as the president of the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine from 2019-21. I currently hold dual board certifications in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I am also certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Board of Addiction Medicine. It’s been my privilege to be awarded the Exemplary Teacher Award five times by the UF College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry.

I am currently working on a research project regarding expanding our knowledge related to drug testing and forensic toxicology. Some of my areas of special expertise include alcohol use disorder, anxiety, cannabis use disorder, depression, opioid use disorder, sedative use disorder, stimulant use disorder and tobacco use disorder. I want my patients to know I will always strive for optimal outcomes for them. If I don’t know the answer to a clinical question, I’m not afraid to admit that, but I will figure it out.

In my spare time, I enjoy working on home improvement projects, golfing and fishing.
