Theodore A Bowles, D.O.
Assistant Professor Addiction Medicine
About Theodore A Bowles
My name is Dr. Theodore Bowles, and I am an assistant professor in the University of Florida Department of Psychiatry. I am also the primary attending for the inpatient addiction medicine consult service.
I became interested in medicine as an undergraduate student while working in a large hospital Emergency Room. There, I witnessed the powerful and immediate impact that life-saving interventions had on patients and their families. I was impressed that often, on the worst day of their lives, patients and families were able to express their deep gratitude for the care they received. That experience also made me very aware of the struggles the homeless and poverty-stricken communities face, and the high prevalence of substance use disorders.
I earned my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Kansas City University of Health Sciences in 1982, served in the US Army and trained in anesthesiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. I completed my Addiction Medicine Fellowship at UF in 2021. I am board-certified in emergency medicine and addiction medicine.
In 2020, I lost a child to an opioid overdose. My experiences as an Emergency Physician and as a father of a child suffering from substance use disorder have given me unique insight into the experience of patients with substance use disorder and the conflicting feelings experienced by their families and loved ones. This is what motivates me every morning when I come to work.
My primary interests include the education of medical students, residents and our Addiction Medicine Fellows in current, evidence-based practices and helping them develop skills to effectively practice addiction medicine.
My clinical interests include alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, opioid withdrawal, opioid use disorder during pregnancy, stimulant use disorder, and co-occurring medical conditions in the setting of substance use disorder.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my four dogs, woodworking, and fishing.
