Dr. Moreno De Luca Discusses Community-Driven Advances in Autism Research

Dr. Moreno De Luca presents to residents and faculty at the UF Health Psychiatric Hospital.

On Friday, November 15th, Daniel Moreno De Luca, MD, MSc, CASA Research Chair and Faculty at the University of Alberta, delivered a lecture at UF Health Psychiatric Hospital as part of our Grand Rounds Series. His presentation titled “Precision Medicine in Autism (PRISMA): Lighting the Path to Research Through Community Perspectives in Genomic Psychiatry,” explored how genetics, research, and community collaboration can transform care for individuals with autism and neurodevelopmental conditions.

Dr. Moreno De Luca introduced the work of the Precision Medicine in Autism (PRISMA) group, which focuses on understanding the diverse strengths and challenges of individuals with rare genetic changes—found in up to one-third of people with autism or related diagnoses. Through a holistic approach combining research, clinical care, education, and community engagement, PRISMA aims to improve healthcare for those with psychiatric conditions linked to genomic disorders. The name “PRISMA,” Spanish for “prism,” reflects their commitment to diversity and a multifaceted approach to care.

One of the highlights of his presentation was the PRISMA Library of Life video, which introduces characters Bo, DiNA, and friends to explain key concepts such as autism, genetics, and genetic testing in a fun, clear, and engaging way for kids on the autism spectrum and their families.

As the inaugural CASA Research Chair, Dr. Moreno De Luca continues to advance precision medicine, blending cutting-edge science with meaningful community-driven insights to ensure inclusive and accessible healthcare solutions.
