Dual disorders have become more common as physicians have successfully evaluated and referred to treatment many patients with alcohol and/or drug abuse and psychiatric disorders. Recent research reports have confirmed what our experts at the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Florida Recovery Center (FRC) have experienced at the center, more patients have major psychiatric disease and concurrent drug and alcohol abuse or dependence than not. Over half of all current cigarette smokers have a psychiatric disease. Drugs trigger latent psychiatric vulnerabilities, precipitate lifelong psychiatric disease and are self-medications for depressed, bipolar, anxious, attention deficit and other patients. While FRC has always had a large and well-known group of addiction medicine boarded clinicians and faculty led by Scott Teitelbaum, M.D., we also have a large group of psychiatrists who are also board certified in addiction. The Division of Addiction Psychiatry includes inpatient and outpatient specialists Martha Brown, M.D., William Greene, M.D., Jamie Smolen, M.D., Lou Solomon, M.D. and Kimberly White, M.D. who evaluate and treat adolescent to geriatric dual disorders patients.

The Department of Psychiatry offers one and two year fellowships in Addiction Medicine. The University of Florida College of Medicine began offering a Fellowship in Addiction Medicine in 1992. As one of the largest addiction medicine fellowships, we have matriculated more than forty addiction medicine professionals. American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) fellows participate in a wide range of academic activities including clinical and basic science research, medical education, and patient care clinics. The fellowship offers training in inpatient detoxification, evaluation, treatment, consults as well as outpatient and partial hospitalization and treatment. Education in drugs of abuse and treatment for their misuse is obtained through both didactic and hands on instruction. This training will provide the basis for the applicant to sit for the ABAM and Medical Review Officer certifications. Fellows have come from a wide range of specialty training including psychiatry, anesthesiology, neurosurgery, family medicine, internal and family medicine, surgery, and pediatrics.

Fellows have the opportunity to choose from an impressive list of available public sector addiction training experiences in dual disorders, health information, multidisciplinary overeating and eating disorders programs, pain management, state and local tobacco initiatives, as well as the more traditional detoxification units, relapse prevention methodologies, and day treatment programs. Opportunities to work with addiction researchers in public health and basic science are available to the interested applicant. Many of our Graduates have continued in research careers, taken prestigious academic positions and medical director posts in community treatment facilities.

More Information

Applicant must be a US citizen and must hold an unrestricted State of Florida medical license. For more information please contact Connie Pruitt 352-265-5549 or cpruitt@ufl.edu.
