Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Service (Unit 82)

Director: Martin J. Repetto, MD, PhD

Our Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Service (Unit 82) is a 22-bed unit located in Shands Hospital. We provide services for a variety of psychiatric conditions and concurrent medical problems. Our Intake and Evaluation Service provides diagnostic evaluations and brief inpatient treatment for new patients with diagnostic or treatment issues. Individuals are evaluated by senior staff psychiatrists and treatment implemented or recommendations sent back to referring psychiatrists. Patients with medical and psychiatric illnesses are treated in our Psych-Med Service and are co-managed by psychiatry and other services in the health center. There is an active Electroconvulsive Therapy Service, headed by Dr. Richard Holbert, serving the needs of both inpatients and outpatients.

Our Gero-Psych Service is geared toward the evaluation and treatment of psychiatric issues common to the geriatric population, such as dementia or other cognitive disorders, depression, psychiatric disorders due to a general medical condition, or substance induced psychiatric disorder. There is frequent consultation with area nursing homes.

There is much interaction between the psychiatry services and other medical services in order to best meet the needs of our geriatric-psychiatry and medical-psychiatry patients. Treatment modalities include psychopharmacology, individual psychotherapy including brief, crisis intervention, and cognitive-behavioral, family and group therapy. Every patient on Unit 82 is seen daily by a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team who contributes to the care of that patient. This includes attending and resident physicians, psychologists, occupational therapy staff, social workers, and a case manager.
