Message from the Chair
As a pivotal and groundbreaking cornerstone for research and clinical medicine, the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida (UF) is recognized nationally for its multiple contributions in the fields of Addiction Medicine, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Public Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.
UF College of Medicine has helped the Department recruit and retain more double and triple boarded experts than have been assembled in any one place in history and throughout the world. Our Department is fortunate to have so many national and international leaders , dynamic translational and clinical programs and also be able to grow to meet the needs of the State and nation. We have over 60 full time Faculty working with Residents, Fellows, Medical and Ph.D students.
Our faculty have joined UF from leading institutions throughout the country to provide educational excellence to residents and fellows. Fostering this level of learning and education in our residents is critical to continuing UF’s longstanding tradition of producing physicians of distinction in their respective fields. I believe the residents we bring into our training programs are the leaders for UF as well as academic and psychiatric care centers throughout the world.
Our residency and fellowship training programs exhibit strong evidence of faculty influence and mentorship producing both academic and community physicians. This continuity of tradition in leadership is noted in our graduates. Our education is embraced by a variety of locations providing a diverse and broad patient population including Shands Hospital, Malcolm Randall VA Hospital, Florida Recovery Center, Shands Vista, Psychiatry at Spring Hill Health Center, North East Florida State Hospital, Helping Hands and Center for Psychiatry & Addiction Medicine Vero Beach.
The research and administrative focal point is housed in the McKnight Brain Institute one of the world’s largest and renowned research facilities where the Departments of Psychiatry, Neurology, Neuroscience, and Neurosurgery collectively team together to produce innovative discoveries. UF Department of Psychiatry Residents and Fellows are now working throughout Florida and the nation pursuing academic medicine, further subspecialty training, or private and community practice.
UF is home of the Gators and well known for its national achievements in sports. It is nestled in the beautiful and biodiverse city of Gainesville providing an exceptional cost of living with an array of restaurants and outdoor activities. According to their recent ranking, Livability.com, a website dedicated to profiling the country’s most desirable places to live, Gainesville was ranked number 1 where Athens, Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt closely trailed behind this city of charm!
As Chair of the Department, I invite you to learn more about our educational endeavors and excellent residency and fellowship opportunities here at UF. I look forward to meeting you during our recruitment season and further speaking with you about the opportunities here at UF.
