Dual Disorders: Addiction Psychiatry

Published: November 13th, 2012

Dual disorders have become more common as physicians have successfully evaluated and referred to treatment many patients with alcohol and/or drug abuse and psychiatric disorders.  Recent research reports have confirmed what our experts at the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Florida Recovery Center (FRC) have experienced at the center, more patients have major psychiatric disease and concurrent drug and alcohol abuse or dependence than not. Over half of all current cigarette smokers have a psychiatric disease. Drugs trigger latent psychiatric vulnerabilities, precipitate lifelong psychiatric disease and are self-medications for depressed, bipolar, anxious, attention deficit and other patients. While FRC has always had a large and well-known group of addiction medicine boarded clinicians and faculty led by Scott Teitelbaum, M.D., we also have a large group of psychiatrists who are also board certified in addiction. The Division of Addiction Psychiatry includes inpatient and outpatient specialists Martha Brown, M.D., William Greene, M.D., Jamie Smolen, M.D., Lou Solomon, M.D. and Kimberly White, M.D. who evaluate and treat adolescent to geriatric dual disorders patients.
